How do you bring a 19th century church into the 21st century, without detracting from the history, feel, and spirit of the space? Here’s what we did to help Woodfords Congregational Church meet their evolving needs.
Originally opened in 1872, Woodfords Congregational Church was designed by Francis Fassett and E.F. Fassett. In 2021, SMS partnered with the church on a technological upgrade fit for this century.
Part of the church’s goals was to transform their venue into something multipurpose—fit for church services, but also community gatherings, rentals, and other events. To help, we worked with them to redesign their entire lighting system, from a front lighting wash to pot lights in the ceiling for color splash. We also installed TV screens in many rooms throughout, including the sanctuary, narthex, and cloister.
During the pandemic, many congregations were forced to skip out on weekly gatherings or stream services with whatever tools at their disposal. We worked with Woodfords Congregational Church to implement a modern, multi-camera streaming system, allowing them and their clients and community partners to stream sermons, speeches, and special events to anyone on the other side of a link.
